National party politics in the UK has reached fever pitch. I’m going to be restrained and stay out of it. A piece of news that may have slipped under your radar is that a new public sector pay freeze may be introduced. It looks like many of those key workers that we all came out of our houses to clap (including ourselves) will be the ones to suffer financially for the Covid crisis while those who made a mint from people’s suffering will continue to get even richer still. We can’t let this happen without a fight. Sign our petition below even if you don’t do anything else.

 

And remember that in spite of promising news on vaccines that the virus has not gone away. We are seeing a second spike in infections. Please keep following the rules to protect the public, your colleagues, your friends, and your family. And despite its shortcomings I strongly recommend that you download the NHS app if you have a suitable smartphone.

Coronavirus Outbreaks

We are still getting regular reports of suspected and proven cases in Jobcentres and the CMG centre. Mostly the procedures work but it can sometimes be chaotic. If you are a manager please get PCS reps involved at the earliest opportunity so that we can help.

 

Jobcentres are open to staff again. I’m hoping that we have got in control of the outbreaks among staff for now. Please keep you PCS rep informed of any suspected or proven cases and we will help to ensure that the process is followed.

 

We should now be only seeing vulnerable customers face to face and only then if we cannot deal with them in any other way. And remember we must be able to clean properly if the public are coming into the building. If there is no cleaner please make sure that PCS Health & Safety reps are informed immediately so we can give advice.

 

We are still seeking further clarification on use of the Covid-19 app at work and will let everyone know the results when negotiations are complete.

 

We succeeded in stopping a big increase in later opening in Jobcentres during the pandemic but are still arguing to stop the needless expansion of Saturday working. But progress is slow.

The Government intends for all vehicles to be emission-free by 2040 and is offering a sweetener in the form of a grant of 35% of the purchase price (up to £3,500, via the dealer) on approved vehicles (www.gov.uk/plug-in-car-van-grants) to those who are keen to trade in the diesel/petrol guzzler they house overnight in their garage for an electric model.

Being eco-wise is about celebrating creation and passing on those values to the next generation. There are lots of little things we can do in our homes to play our small part in reducing landfill waste, cleaning the air, and preserving the natural landscape. But we double our efforts when we get our kids involved, helping them understand the why to our what. When they get it, it’ll be second nature when they’re adults—and that much easier to pass it down to their children. Start an herb garden/planter. These are great for kids because they’re virtually fool-proof, and they’re great for you because they provide abundant flavour for your family’s meals. They don’t take much – a bit of soil, lots of sunlight, and watering. You can easily transplant starters from your local nursery, but you can also start from seeds and use the process as a learning experiment for your kids. My bonfire party took place yesterday with only 3 of us, including me. Catering was far easier but I did miss the big event that it normally is. I guess that many who are celebrating Diwali next week will feel the same. Remembrance Day is on Wednesday. Although most events will be cancelled or drastically scaled back we should still take some time to remember all those who have died in wars and redouble our efforts to prevent war in the future. This means there is a huge amount of waste, most of which ends up in the oceans. It’s Halloween tomorrow but there should be no trick or treating. And it’s bonfire night next Thursday. It’s a big thing in our house we normally have a dozen or more come round for supper, bonfire and fireworks. But not this year. It will be a maximum of 6. I’ll still enjoy it but it won’t be the same. And although there may be fewer fireworks this year you will still need to keep people and pets safe. Another week and coronavirus news dominates the headlines; in the country and locally. There are, of course, other issues but I’m not going to comment on extending free school meals through the school holidays. Whatever your views on letting children go hungry I’ll let you make your own mind up. Personally I think that child poverty is a bad thing. Local foodbanks are all looking for donations of time, money and food. Please help out if you can in any way that you are able to. Remember that the virus has not gone away. We have had a fantastic response but we still need more signatures. Coronavirus Outbreaks Wellington Street Jobcentre has shut for a week as a circuit breaker because of a cluster of cases. PCS supports this decision. We are trying to ensure that this doesn’t cause a knock on effect of overloading our other Jobcentres, especially as there have been cases in other Jobcentres which have been closed to the public for deep cleaning. We are still getting reports of cases in city and county all the time. As I’m writing this I’m hearing that New Walk is closed for a second consecutive day as well and we are seeking confirmation. If accurate this could put a lot of pressure on to Charles Street. Please make sure that any cases are notified to PCS. We will help management to ensure that correct procedures are followed and that we keep members of staff and the public as safe as we can. We have been in discussions with CMG management. We believe that it is incongruous that the Jobcentre should shut but CMG remain open as there are so many common areas; staff entrance, lift, stairs, HASSRA room, canteen, etc. and some staff do move around the office such as the security guards. Both PCS and management are taking further advice from national management and health and safety experts. PCS reps continue to discuss this issue and lobby for CMG to fall in line with the Jobcentre and prevent further cases. Please be vigilant on all safety procedures and keep your reps aware of what is going on. I sincerely hope that there are no more cases in CMG. The Diwali Wheel of Light opens today in Belgrave Road. I miss not have the light switch on this year and mingling with the crowds but it was correct to not hold the event. We have had a fantastic response but we still need more signature Reopening Jobcentres We achieved some significant concessions. We managed to get 8 p.m. finishes changed to 6:30 ones. We will continue to argue our case and ask if we need so many people working lates that didn’t need to do so in previous rotations. We are also trying to enable vulnerable people who are working from home to do lates and Saturdays from home. We have met with district managers yesterday to discuss these and other issues. I will let you know if there are any significant outcomes when I know myself. Locally PCS Health & Safety reps are trying to get as many mitigations in place to make your workplace as safe as it can be. For your own safety, the safety of your colleagues and the safety of our customers, please make sure that you strictly adhere to these mitigations. If you have any ideas for improvements or there is a breakdown in procedures (for example cleaners not being available) please report this to your manager and PCS. While PCS advice is still to not volunteer to work face to face the guidance has recently been changed to remove this. Your manager will still need to discuss your concerns with you. If your Jobcentre plans to open further or change working practices please contact PCS to ensure that the process has been followed and concerns of members addressed. We need to know all the problems and potential problems so we can try and get mitigations put in place. PCS will continue to monitor the situation. Leicester has now been in local lockdown for over 100 days. That is in addition to the national lockdown. We have been locked down in the city for well over 6 months in total and it sometimes seems like we will never get out. But the virus has not gone away. We are seeing a second spike in infections. Please keep following the rules to protect the public, your colleagues, your friends, and your family. And despite its shortcomings I strongly recommend that you download the NHS app if you have a suitable smartphone. Here is the latest news. Pay Please, please, please SIGN THE PCS PETITION. Do it NOW. Ask your colleagues to sign, ask your friends to sign, ask your family to sign. Drag the government to the negotiating table. We have had a fantastic response but we still need more signature Reopening Jobcentres We achieved some significant concessions last week. See here for details. We still think that management need to make more. We will continue to argue our case. Locally PCS Health & Safety reps are trying to get as many mitigations in place to make your workplace as safe as it can be. For your own safety, the safety of your colleagues and the safety of our customers, please make sure that you strictly adhere to these mitigations. If you have any ideas for improvements or there is a breakdown in procedures (for example cleaners not being available) please report this to your manager and PCS. While PCS advice is still to not volunteer to work face to face the guidance has recently been changed to remove this. Your manager will still need to discuss your concerns with you. If your Jobcentre plans to open further or change working practices please contact PCS to ensure that the process has been followed and concerns of members addressed. We need to know all the problems and potential problems so we can try and get mitigations put in place. PCS will continue to monitor the situation. People Survey PCS is encouraging members to complete the survey which is now open. Please answer honestly. See here for further details. Black History Month October is Black History Month. We do, of course, work to oppose discrimination against our black members the whole year round as we do for all other members who experience oppression. But it is good to take stock, look at the history and how far we have come, and think about how far we still have to go. For more see the PCS web site here. BAME Risk Assessments Initial numbers suggest that uptake is lower than expected so far. The process is here. If you are BAME or if you manage BAME staff please read the procedure. We strongly recommend that managers encourage their BAME staff to have this risk assessment. Pension Justice Join the PCS campaign. We have had some success in court but there is more work to do.
